And it came to pass that the Chinese drove the white people from their forest homes onto the plains. And the Tibetans came to rule over them, so that the white people did follow the tolerant Mongols down into the high mountains of northwestern Yunnan. Here the white people thrived by the lakes in sheltering valleys.

We’re not playing Mad Libs with the bible. The path of the white people has been beset on all sides by oppression. In the Han Dynasty they were zuo, or “white wolves”. By the Song, the less imaginative “western barbarians” served to refer to them. Not until 1960 did they win formal recognition from the government as Pumi, the white people.

Dermatologically, the whitest thing about the Pumi is their teeth. The flaxen gowns their children wear are the only other clues to why these people would call themselves white. That, and their Alpine tendency to dwell on gentle hillsides by the water, in log houses with plenty of space between neighbors. No surprise, considering their home at 2500 meters, nestled in the piney bower between Old Folk and Yak mountains, spreading down to Dali’s Lugu Lake, resembles Interlaken more than any place within hawking and spitting distance of the Yangtze.

But after log cabins, the way of the Pumi and the Caucasian diverge dramatically. In outlook, the Han are whiter than the Pumi. For the Pumi would rather sing than argue, dance than devise, and insist on clinging to all that superstitious nonsense that deceives them into contentedly believing they live lives of meaning. If that sounds like a lot of minorities in western China, well then kindly remember a lot of people hardly see the difference between a Dutchman and a Dane.

To a people numbering scarcely over 30,000, that meaning boils down to divinely simple continuity. A wooden Pumi dwelling is a mini cosmos, with round pillars in each corner and a square one in the middle, the “heaven holding pole”, conduit between eternal and daily life. A massive hearth is the other dominant feature, beds laid around, and ancestral shrine behind.

The odd set of sheep or cattle horns, often with skull still attached, adorns most Pumi dwellings and might be taken for talismans of ill intent. These are symbols of wealth, however, and should deter none from visiting. Around the fire the Pumi spend the little leisure time afforded a pastoral/agricultural lifestyle, and rejoice in guests to entertain, rare as they are. Beyond communal bread-breaking, a Pumi clan will see their hearth-side guest eat to heart’s content before feeding itself. Only in the hardest of times will that guest leave without the four gifts, a fowl’s leg, a wedge of dried pork, a gourd of tea leaves, and a bottle of liquor.

With few visitors, the ebullient Pumi measure breaks from plow and pasture by festival. Not that all social intercourse is for public spectacle. Practically speaking, continuity means children. Until recently, Pumi arranged their children’s marriages with the all the care and worry of folk who can all too easily envision the end of their scant line. Beef-fed and heady from ion-positive air, the lusty Pumi youth took to melodramatic romance like middle school students to manga. The hills resounded to the improv- tunes of lovesick shepherds and jilted maids. The moon shone on glens where skylarking couples serenaded each other, and the bushes shook discretely.

Nowadays Pumi youngsters get considerably more leeway in choosing mates, and the berry of clandestine romance is not so sweet. Yet choose they must, and obey a host of pre and post connubial ordinances that go far in explaining the lack of over-population in Pumi country. Indeed, for an endangered species of a people such as the Pumi, hell bent on stocking their log cabins with three or four generations before breathing their last, they are uncharacteristically prim about how children are made in the first place. Even after the wedding, a new couple must conspire in moonlight Blueberry Hill courtship rituals until a baby is produced.

This is where even the ultra-PC China Expat deplores the excesses of ancient ways, for while they do lend a sense of wholeness to a minority tribesman’s life that we angst-ridden moderns will never understand, they also entail a cloud of taboos to dampen the most progressive souls. Some are just kosher: no cat or dog, horse or frog meat. Some are tragic-comic, such as ceremonially kidnapping the bride from her work between the wheat rows on her wedding day. Most are just tiresome. No singing love songs in the house, no making noise while you eat. No washing, combing, or cutting hair at night. No caps worn to the wrong side. No touching someone else’s head. No reason necessary. We’ve always done it that way.

Yet for all the tangled practice, the theory behind Pumi faith is one of elegant simplicity, and explains the origin of the White People, or at least their name. They spring from an all-mother, the goddess Dingba Cimu, adorned in raiment as white as the mule she rides, and the blameless milk she drinks. Her home lies in a cave on Cizi Mountain. Thousands of Pumi go there each winter to seek boons and offer sacrifices, but only women are allowed in the cave. In a similar vein, only women can be witches, better to say priestesses, of the Pumi religion, called Dingba or Hangui. So call it animistic, call it antiquarian, but you can’t call the Pumi way of life patriarchal. No coincidence the low rate of pointless feuding, and high frequency of singing and dancing, just as with their neighbors, the Mosuo.

The Lhasa Apso was a dog breed established approximately around the 7th century AD. They were first discovered in the isolated ranges of the Himalayan Mountains.

Incidentally, during that time, Tibet was going through its conversion to Buddhism. As a result, Lhasa Apsos were extensively trained and were used as temple guards. But perhaps the trait that makes Lhasa Apsos the most interesting among all the other dog breeds is the fact that they were sent to the imperial courts of China as tokens of respect, veneration, and fortuity. As good luck talismans, the best of this breed were even sent to accompany the Dalai Lama.

It was not until the 1930s before Lhasa Apsos made their way to the Western world. Getting these dogs from the East all the way to the West was quite difficult since there was a point in time that exporting this breed was forbidden. Nonetheless, Tibetan dogs made their first appearance in England during the Youngsband expedition. Back then, they were referred to as Lhasa Terriers.

Since it was virtually impossible to get more Tibetan dogs for breeding, the English started breeding them with Terriers. Not long after, the Tibetan breed died out. Thankfully, a few Tibetan specimens were eventually brought in. Few people were able to breed Apsos, but they remained among the elite.

Unfortunately, for quite some time the Second World War halted the English breeding of these dogs. However, after the war, a man named Suydam Cutting was privileged enough to receive five dogs from the 13th Dalai Lama. After the 13th Dalai Lamas death, the Regent offered them two more dogs, a couple of golden Lhasa-Apsos.

For a time, Lhasa Apsos were even bred with Shih Tzus from China. But as time progressed, a good number of Lhasa Apsos were brought into the West — just enough to be able to continue the lineage of this wonderful breed.

It is also interesting to know that the way dogs of this breed have been regarded with such importance and attention has ultimately helped them develop such strong personalities. Lhasa Apsos are very alert and intelligent dogs, but they also possess the constant need to be in charge. Dogs of this breed can be quite hardheaded and bossy.

Nonetheless, it is always helpful to take a look back at our loving pet companions history. Not only does it provide us with interesting tidbits of information, most importantly, it helps us understand our furry companions as best as we can.

The origins of charms and charm bracelets go back to very ancient history when charms were worn to please the gods, to ward off evil spirits, or to gain entry into the afterlife.

Carrying charms to protect against evil goes back to Neolithic times when hunters would carry interesting stones and trinkets for good luck.

The Babylonians are believed to be the first people to wear charms on a bracelet around 700 BC.

However, archaeologists have found examples of charm bracelets in the tombs of the pharaohs in ancient Egypt going back as far as 1450BC and mostly worn by men. The charms were used to ward of evil spirits, protect loved ones when the moved on to the afterlife, to improve fertility and to ensure prosperity.

In the Roman era, it is known that Christians fearful of religious persecution carried small charms shaped like a fish to identify themselves to other Christians.

The Greeks and Romans also carried charms, usually out of superstition or respect for their gods and the ancient practice of carrying something symbolic includes soldiers going off to war carrying a lock of their wives’ or sweethearts’ hair.

During the middle ages, charms were worn by knights to signify rank and family origin but charm bracelets really became popular in the UK and Europe during the reign of Queen Victoria, largely among the aristocracy as displays of wealth since only the wealthy could afford to have specially made items in precious materials such as gold and silver or set with gemstones.

Collecting charms really took off in the Second World War. Soldiers away from home collected small items to remind them of lost comrades, of places they had been and as gifts for loved ones back home. Gradually charms came to be a means of collecting and storing personal memories.

Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, charm bracelets became a particularly popular gift for girls reaching particular milestones in life, 16th and 18th birthdays, engagements and weddings and their owners would then add charms that marked other significant moments, such as the birth of a child or children or an anniversary.

Often charm bracelets assembled over a lifetime would be passed on from mother to daughter.

Today, though some still use them to mark significant events, they are used by all sorts of organisations, from charities to religions, as well as being fashion items.

Most recent has been the fashion for making up bead charm bracelets to suit the wearer’s tastes, outfit, favourite colours, or if they are interested in the meanings of gems to either protect the wearer or promote a particular wish, from attracting prosperity or love, or helping the wearer to greater mental clarity or focus. Particularly popular are bracelets containing collections of the famous Venetian murano glass beads, sometimes mixed with silver engraved beads.

We may like to think that we’re no longer superstitious, but the plethora of websites and books on the subject of charms, gemstone and colour meanings suggests that somewhere inside we still need tokens or talismans in times of stress.

Our prehistoric ancestors may have used charms. They may have been simply an unusually shaped natural item such as a rock or piece of wood. Elaborate jewelry and charms evolved during the age of the Pharaohs in Egypt. Charms and charm bracelets have been found from this period in history. As you know, the Egyptians prepared their dead for the afterlife. Part of the preparation included adornment with jewelry. This indicated the deceased’s status in life and provided supposed protection in the afterlife. The Egyptians also believed that charms acted as identification of the wearer for the gods. The gods would recognize the wearer and guide him or her to the correct status level.

During the days of the Roman Empire, charms in the shape of fish were used by Christians to identify themselves to other Christians. Jewish scholars would wear pieces of jewelry hung around the neck. These would contain small pieces of parchment with words of scripture, to keep the Word near to the heart of the wearer. In the Middle Ages, charms and amulets were worn for protection by knights and kings. Charms were used to decorate belts to signify family heritage, status and professions. The wearing of charms began to lose significance during the Renaissance, when people were becoming more educated and superstitions were fading.

Early in the 20th century, charms regained popularity when Queen Victoria of England wore bracelets.
Charms then underwent a change from practical purpose tools to fashionable decorations. By the end of World War II, charm jewelry became a fashion rage. Soldiers brought them to sweethearts and family members as souvenirs from all parts of the world. Native Americans began crafting metal talismans that reflected their world and their beliefs. The jewelry industry propagated the trend by creating charms for many occasions. Comic strip and Walt Disney characters provided models for new charms.

By the 1950′s, charm bracelets had become a coveted fashion accessory. Milestones in life such as births, weddings, graduations, birthdays were all celebrated by adding a charm to the bracelet on one’s wrist. Those charms are now considered vintage. Some sell for huge prices to serious collectors. Even though charms lost some popularity again in the 1970′s, with the advent of disco and plain gold chains, they have seen yet another resurgence in the fashion world. They are now available in all price ranges and a multitude of styles.

It has been scientifically proven that every living organism and inanimate object emits a subtle amount of negative or positive energy, depending on its nature. Good luck charms are objects that possess positive, spiritual energy and produce a positive influence over the fortune of a person possessing the same.

Good luck charms utilize their latent positive energies and powers for reducing and completely eliminating the negative effects and energies that surround the person. At the same time, the lucky charms allow the wearer/user to exploit the good times and their own, natural powers and energies for improving their fate.

According to the study conducted by the British University, 30% of the people who carried the good luck charms believed that their luck improved genuinely since the time they started using the good luck charms. Thus, it wont be wrong to say that the faith that the people place in the good luck charms also plays an important role in allowing these symbols and forms to work.

Some of the lucky charms that people from around the world have found as the effective sources of positive, spiritual energy are horse shoe, feathers, keys, acorn, beetle, Swastik, OM, crystal charms, Zodiac charms, evil eye bracelets, Hamsa jewelry, Kabbalah red string bracelet, and talismans.

Those of you who wish to increase the positive spiritual energy surrounding you and want good health, fame, happiness, love, and prosperity and material happiness to be bestowed upon you; you may wear the good luck charms.

However, if you want the good luck charm to really work for you, you must get a clear understanding of the nature of the charm and how it works to bring good luck and fortune. For example, Swastik bestows luck and prosperity only when it is placed in a clock-wise direction. If confused with the Nazi Swastik or placed at an angle, it would not produce any positive energy. Similarly, acorn should be used only if you want wealth or want to attract the opposite sex.

In order to ensure the effectiveness of the good luck charms, it is equally important to ensure that the good luck charm that you buy is genuine. Whether you buy evil eye bracelet, Hamsa bracelet, or any other good luck charm, buy it from a trusted source or a manufacturer who specializes in making genuine good luck charms, amulets, evil eye jewelry, and other lucky charms and symbols.
