I’m Looking for a Four-Leaf Clover (or How to Idle in a Field of Dreams)

By swerveball | Published: June 12, 2008

One of the things I used to do when I was a child was look for four-leaf clovers. It’s mostly due to my grandfather, Fred, who was an avid gardener as well as being a great fibber and pretty good at idling. I learnt a lot from him.

Four-Leaf Clover Facts

There is only one true clover that is considered lucky, but other types of plants that look similar to the clover have been embraced by those who celebrate St Patrick’s Day as a symbol of the lucky clover.  Oxalis is a traditional replacement for Trifolium repens as a lucky symbol.

RENEGADE PRIMED FOR FOUR LEAF CLOVER

by fourleafclovergoodluckcharms

Trainer Tom Fanning and driver Yannick Gingras may have tamed the “Renegade” in time for the $137,120 Four Leaf Clover on Saturday night (March 25) at the Meadowlands.

The Four Leaf Clover is one of a trio of Winter Series Finals, worth a total of $361,780, that highlight this weekend’s racing programs. The top pacing mares in the $118,560 Overbid share the Friday night card with a feature for 3-Year-Old pacers, the $106,100 Matt’s Scooter.

Pacific Renegade makes his next start in the highly contentious Four Leaf Clover Final, coming off a victory last week in the second round of the three-week series.

Four Leaf Clover Badges

by fourleafclovergoodluckcharms

Making appliqued fabric covered button badges

See how I made these Good Luck – Four Leaf Clover badges, below:

I’ve sussed it!  Actually, I make that sound like there’s an enormous amount of skill involved, but really it’s all about patience.

Applique the badges
I’ve  found that if I applique the designs first, although it’s still fiddly, it’s much less so!

Cut out the badges
Then cut them out, and trim around the appliques.

Hey presto! Make them into badges (using a badge machine)

I’m giving one of these to a very special friend who starts her new job on Monday, although she won’t need good luck because she’ll be fabulous!

Is Veterinary Medicine Right for You?

by fourleafclovergoodluckcharms

Today’s veterinarians are extremely dedicated and willing to work long, difficult hours to save the life of an animal or help solve a public health crisis. Among the personal attributes that contribute to a successful career in veterinary medicine are:

A SCIENTIFIC MIND—Individuals who are interested in veterinary medicine should have an inquiring mind and keen powers of observation. Aptitude and interest in the biological sciences are important. Veterinarians must maintain a lifelong interest in scientific learning, and must genuinely like and understand animals.

GOOD COMMUNICATION SKILLS—Veterinarians should be able to meet, talk, and work well with a variety of people. Compassion is an essential attribute for success, especially for veterinarians working with pet owners who form strong bonds with their pets.

MANAGEMENT EXPERIENCE—Many work environments (e.g., private or corporate clinical practice, governmental agencies, public health programs) require that veterinarians manage other employees and businesses. Basic managerial and leadership skills make these positions much more rewarding.
