The
Four leaf clover
is the most well known lucky symbol around the world and across many very different cultures. It is the most common yet the rarest to find. On average, there are 100,000 three leaf clovers for every instance of a true four leaf clover.

According to legend of western cultures, each of the four leaf clovers represent one theme.
- first leaf is for hope
- second leaf is for faith
- third leaf is for love
- fourth leaf is for luck.
In Irish tradition, a three leaf clover, a Shamrock supposedly represents the Holy Trinity – The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit. If a four leaf clover is found, then the fourth leaf is considered to bring God’s Grace. They also believe that when St. Patrick was trying to teach the Irish people and others about Christianity, he used the three-leaf to help then understand the concept of the Holy Trinity.

According to some traditions, a young woman seeking a husband should go in search of a four-leaf clover. If she is fortunate enough to find one, she is to eat it. The first unmarried man she encounters after eating the clover will be the one she will wed. Another tradition of gaining a husband or wife is to find a four-leaf clover and place it in one’s shoe first thing in the morning. The first unmarried member of the opposite sex encountered that day will be one’s future spouse.

The idea of using the four-leaf clover as an emblem for the 4-H program is credited to Oscar Herman Benson (1875-1951). When Wright County school superintendent Benson dropped by to visit a one-room school house near Clarion, Iowa, the students outside for recess presented him with a good will gift of seven just-picked four-leaf clovers. This simple gesture inspired Benson to select the four-leaf clover for the 4-H emblem. He awarded three-leaf and four-leaf clover pennants and pins for students’ agricultural and domestic science exhibits at school fairs that Benson promoted”.
