Having grown up at The Mean Fiddler I feel uncomfortably comfortable calling it my second home.
The place has gone through such a dramatic transformation over the last 6 to 7 years it makes for a good script. From a consistent multiple award winning hotel through 2006 and 2007 to being placed on the problem venues list late 2008 this place has seen it all.
The Mean Fiddler is now the people’s hotel, Friday is 18-26 age bracket young crowd, Saturday 27 + for the older age bracket, it simply has it all.
From the 3 bars, The Fiddler Bar the traditional Irish Bar as its been labelled by management where you can commence you night with a few quiet drinks with friends ,The Woolshed listening and singing to those iconic tunes belted out by the live band, The third The Drovers Bar caters for the locals and the workers in the arvo who feel a little parched and in typical tradie style they can sit on the verandah in the sun, 3pm, down a cold one TAB facilities arms length away and finish the day off in style, but by mid evening this place is overtaken with the people who are out for a big night.
Those who like the courtyard are in luck, this thing is huge, and the atmosphere sitting in different locations will offer you a different experience.
From roughly 10:30pm downstairs on the outside dance floor (The Sub Bar) you’ll hear the beats pumping out from the DJ playing typical House beats, with the odd Ministry of Sound event thrown in for good measure. If you want to get in the thick of things entry fee is 10 hard earnt dollars and if you get down there early enough you can grab one of the four intimate booths that can fit quiet a large group in, and if you never been to the fiddler before I suggest you part ways with your cash and experience the true fiddler at its best, going down stairs to the outside dance floor is where my mates and I grew up, all I can ask is for you not to judge me though, if the house music is not for you the music upstairs next to The Fiddler Bar caters more for the RnB fans.
The dining experience is fancy, overpriced typical pub food, with two separate dining areas The Royal Oak Grill and The Fiddler Bar offers a range of products at an inflated price if you can hold out for the Fiddler Burger or kebab after your been ejected or voluntarily walked out I suggest you do so, it’s the only way to finish a night out isn’t it.
The Mean Fiddler offers several private or open function areas to cater for your needs big or small from a family birthday to a wedding reception, each to their own really. The place simply put is huge it’s like a pub crawl within the one hotel, there’s a few other smaller bars in the place you’ll find yourself at during the night, the music is pumping, the crowd well I’d rather you make up your own mind but it won’t take long for that to happen, the place can become a sweatbox inside by the end of the night if you haven’t ventured outside you’ll know about it and phone reception inside is not good, always has been, for those who lose people easily, the night will soon become a blur but as we did we found our way back there weekend after weekend.
Enjoy The Mean Fiddler Experience.

Wedding traditions in the area of the world known as the Oceana region, which includes Australia and New Zealand, are no different than any other country when it comes to their wedding traditions.
For many outsiders to this region, Australia and New Zealand are known for their differences, such as the kangaroo, koala bear and the platypus. However, as you can see, other than the Maori influence, this Oceana region of the world falls right in line with the rest of the world and the bottom line for marriage, love.
Australia
Australia’s many wedding traditions have been formed and followed from generation to generation. In Australia, weddings have a proper way of being done and is expected to be followed. In fact, much of life is also ‘codified’ to a way of living down under.
- As part of a long standing tradition in Australia is the handing down of a family bible. Often these bibles have been through many generations and are considered to be a family heirloom.
- Much of Australia’s traditions come from England, as Australia was once ruled by England. However, it is also not uncommon to have ceremonies to be that of Irish or Scottish decent.
- Although most Australian weddings are entrenched in church weddings, statistics are now showing more and more ceremonies are now taking place outside the church.
- Tradition shows that weddings will include all of the bride and groom’s family members. Despite a wedding having its normal stresses, having the entire family can cause undue stress as well. However, a wedding usually will trump family problems and those issues are set aside to make this day a special one for the new couple.
- Australian weddings may include various traditions of other cultures, such as: the Greek’s linking ribbon coronets, which the bride will wear; India’s horseback arrival carrying the groom to the church; the Jewish drinking glass being stomped on; as well as sugared almonds that are handed out to all the guests, which can be seen in many ceremonies throughout the world. In addition to the almonds, raw nuts may also be given to wedding guests.
- Almonds and nuts generally symbolize fertility, but in some countries, such as Italy, it represents good luck.
- A wedding reception in Australia is filled with a variety of music. It can range from the Scottish bagpipes to traditional England to the United States brands of reception music. It may also include the Aboriginal didgeridoo melodies.
- During the toasting at the reception, the best man has the duty of reading out to the audience any letters, cards or other forms of written well-wishes on behalf of those who could not attend. Often these messages are done playfully.
- At the reception, often ‘I still call Australia Home’ and ‘Waltzing Matilda’ will be played and accompanied by singing and dancing.
- A good cake at your reception is the Lamington, which includes coconut on the outside, while remaining light and tasty.
- Much like other countries, the new couple’s car is often decorated. However in Australia it is common to include a Barbie Doll dangling from the car and often adorned in the clothing in the same manner as the bridesmaids.
New Zealand
- Old tradition has much of New Zealand’s weddings taking place in a lavish church setting.
- A New Zealand wedding may take on many traditional aspects of the Maori customs; Maorians are New Zealand’s native people.
- Ceremonies that have the Maori influence often include the ‘infinity loops’. These loops are placed over the necks of the couple, representing a never ending love; much like the wedding ring.
- Another Maorian tradition is the warrior challenge and may also include the welcoming of the new couple in a ceremony known as ‘Powhiri’.
- Despite the traditional church setting that New Zealand has been known for, New Zealand has taken to more modern methods to marriage locations much like Australia. They may still decide to go with the traditional church wedding, or now they also have the option of a civil wedding or a registry office wedding.
- A civil wedding is often a private ceremony. It may take place in many other locations outside the church setting. Perhaps the ceremony can take place at a park, or beach, or even at a home. In any event, the setting may be different but the results are still the same.
- A registry office wedding is simply done at a government office, usually where the public records are held at. It is short and to the point without the pomp and circumstance.

Though I make a vast majority of my own beer, I nonetheless like to move to my native tap house and have a fresh, high quality craft beer from time to time. I benefit from this in a couple of ways and so can you.
First, it helps with the continual schooling of my ardour for beer making by discussing the specifics of the beers I’m consuming with the knowledgeable bar staff. I also solicit feedback from my fellow patrons at instances and their enter can be informational as well. This may result in inspiration for tweaking an current recipe you utilize or creating one from scratch.
Second, have you ever been out at a bar or restaurant and tried a beer that you simply absolutely liked? That has occurred to me greater than once. For most individuals, that initiates the need to buy extra of that beer at any time when they visit their native watering gap or liquor store. However, for me and the eager home brewer, this could possibly be a chance to duplicate our favorite grownup beverage. The problem is that the beer bottle doesn’t have the recipe on it and most of the time, that data generally is a highly guarded secret.
Well, it is a good thing that there are clone recipes to make beer like our favorites. The simplest way is to Google “beer clone recipes”. You will find and ample quantity to start out exploring. One among my favorite sites for clone recipes and residential brewing information basically is BYO.com. I’ve hand picked 5 clone beer recipes from their web site to get you started. Good luck and enjoy!

Sam Adams Winter Brew
(5 gallon, extract with grains) OG = 1.069 FG = 1.016 IBUs = 26 to 30
Elements:
* 6.6 lbs. Briess wheat malt extract syrup * 1.5 lbs. crystal malt (60degrees Lovibond) * 1 lb. wheat malt * 1.5 lbs. Munich malt (20degrees Lovibond) * 1 teaspoon Irish moss * 1 oz. Curaco orange peel (bitter orange peel) * 0.5 oz. ginger root (freshly grated) * 0.5 tsp. cinnamon (powdered) * 9.5 AAU East Kent Goldings o (2 oz. of 4.75% alpha acid) * 4.5 AAU Tettnanger o (1 oz. of 4.5% alpha acid) * 4.7 AAU Hallertau Hersbrucker o (1 oz. of 4.7% alpha acid) * 3/4 cup corn sugar to prime * German Lager yeast (White Labs WLP830) or Bavarian Lager yeast (Wyeast 2206)
Step by Step:
Steep the grains in 2.5 gallons of water at 150 F for 30 minutes. Strain out the grains, add the wheat malt syrup and return to a boil. When the wort begins boiling, add East Kent Golding hops, Irish moss, and boil for 60 minutes. Add spices for the last quarter-hour of the boil.
Add Tettnanger and Hallertau hops for the last 2 minutes of the boil. Take away from warmth and cool wort in ice bathtub or with wort chiller. Transfer to fermentation vessel (glass carboy). Add enough cold water to the wort to deliver the quantity as much as 5.5 gallons. Pitch yeast and ferment at 50 to 55 F for three to four weeks. Prime, then bottle or keg. You must lager this beer for about four weeks previous to serving.
All-Grain Possibility:
Substitute the wheat malt syrup with 3.5 kilos of pale malt. Enhance the Munich malt to 4 pounds and the wheat malt to 4 pounds. Also change the boiling hops to a smaller quantity, 7 AAU (1.5 oz of 4.75% alpha acid). I might counsel a two-step mash schedule for this beer. This entails doing a 30-minute protein relaxation at 122 F, followed by 60 minutes at 155 F.
Word that the quantity of boiling hops are slightly lower for the all-grain batch. That is because of the better hop extract efficiency that results from a full boil of the entire wort volume. The rest of the hop, spice additions and fermenting directions are the same as the above extract-with-grains recipe instructions.

Ancient Celts once observed the oak’s massive growth and impressive branched expanse above them. They interpreted this as a clear sign that the oak tree was to be honored for its endurance, strength, and noble presence. Wearing oak leaves was once a sign of special social status among the Celts as well as ancient Greeks and Roman people.
According to Celtic tree astrology;
“Those born under the Celtic tree astrology sign of the Oak (June 10 – July 7) have a special gift of strength. They are protective people and often become a champion for those who do not have a voice. In other words, the Oak is the crusader and the spokesperson for the underdog.
Nurturing, generous and helpful, you are a gentle giant among the Celtic zodiac signs. You exude an easy confidence and naturally assume everything will work out to a positive outcome. You have a deep respect for history and ancestry, and many people with this sign become teachers.
You love to impart your knowledge of the past to others. Oak signs have a need for structure, and will often go to great lengths to gain the feeling of control in their lives. Healthy Oak signs live long, full, happy lives and enjoy large family settings and are likely to be involved with large social/community networks. Oak signs pair off well with the Ash and Reed, and are known to harmoniously join with Ivy signs too.”
There are numerous stories in Irish folklore involving mystical trees as a basis. The Irish people often believed that the Celtic tree of life was rooted to the center of the world. The belief was that the sacred tree of life sheltered all life on earth great and small.
According to folklore, the tree of life had branches that reached up into the heavens to touch every star in the sky. The oak, derives its Gaelic name from the Sanskrit word duir, meaning “door.” Many scholars believe that these Druids derived their name from this word combined with the Indo-European root wid, to know, thus becoming the “Wise Ones of the Oakwood.”
The Live Oak was often called the “Oak King” by the Celts and was considered sacred to the druids. They believe the Oak is connected with great strength, money, success, fertility, and even good fortune. To carry the acorn of an oak in your pocket when you go to an important interview or business meeting is believed to give you good luck.

Wedding traditions within the Western European countries of England, Iceland, Ireland and Scotland are just as steeped in tradition and pageantry as anywhere else on Earth. However, like everything else, some traditions may alter in time and become a more modern celebration.
England
In England, on the day of the wedding, it is customary for young girls to scatter flowers in front of the bride and her party as they walk together towards the chapel. Other wedding traditions in an English wedding may also include:
-It is considered good luck for the bride if she sews to the hem of her dress a good luck charm. A traditional charm would be the silver horseshoe of royal British brides.
-Wedding vows may be done at the doorway of the church so that all on lookers can watch the nuptials take place.
-The reception cake includes the fruitcake. At the top of the cake is a layer known as the “christening cake” which is saved and served at their first child’s baptism. Along with the fruitcake, the groom’s cake is also served.
Iceland
Although Iceland weddings have taken on more of a western culture, it still is steep in tradition, such as:
-It is not unusual for a long engagement in Iceland to take place, as many engagements can last as long as three years or longer.
-Weddings are generally done in one day, but there was a time where the wedding was a week long process. It would start the day before the church ceremony with many speeches, songs and drinking.
-The groom’s arrival includes him being surrounded by local nobles, relatives and his best man, as church bells would then be rung announcing the groom’s arrival.
-At the reception, the head table is propped much higher than the rest of the tables in a royalesque manner, as they look down at the rows of guests. The table generally includes the new couple, along with the priest, fathers of the married couple, best man and any toastmasters that will be toasting the new couple.
-The type and size of the feast will depend on the wealth of the bride and groom. The more they have, the bigger the feast will be.
-Traditionally, prior to the conclusion of the reception, the bride would be taken to her bridal bed, where the bridesmaids would then undress her completely, leaving only her headdress. The groom would then bring her a present. Today it is often that both would exchange a gift. After the groom removes her headdress, he would then lie with her in the bed and the priest would perform one final prayer, and to seal their marriage they would drink out of the bridal cups.

In Ireland, it is customary for the bride to wear a Claddagh ring, which has the motto of “Let love and friendship reign.” Worn on the left hand, symbolizes the woman is married. However, worn on the right hand, you would have to see which direction the heart is facing. If it’s facing toward her, then she is engaged, but if it is facing away from her, she is available and looking.
Other Irish wedding and reception traditions include:
-An old wedding day tradition would be for the couple to walk together to the church while on lookers, not only threw rice at them for blessings, but also such items as brushes, pans and pots.
-The white wedding dress was introduced in 1499, where prior to that, the bride’s dress was blue.
-Having the bride wear her hair in a braid on her wedding day symbolizes feminine luck and power.
-The reception may include such things as the “Jaunting Chair” in which the groom is hoisted into the air showing he is now married.
Scotland
In Scotland, many of the past traditions have been altered, but often can be mixed into modern day weddings. Some Scottish traditions include:
-The groom and his party wear the Scottish kilt, sans the undergarments
-Today’s engaged couple still make formal announcements of their intent to marry, which is their way of honoring the past where the tradition of “banns” was more formal and prolonged.
-Often prior to the day of the wedding, the groom’s friends go out drinking until the groom is so drunk that his friends may leave him in front of his house naked and sometimes tied-up.
-On the wedding day, the town may form a path for the couple to walk thru leading them to the church behind bagpipers.

We all know that Halloween is on October 31st each year, but what exactly are the origins of this holiday? Halloween started out by the name of Samhain in the times that the Pagans of Ancient Gaelic culture celebrated as a festival. Most Pagans still celebrate it to this day. It was and is considered a season of harvest by them then and now. The ancient people would gather food they needed for the long winter months ahead at this time. They would also gather up all of the fall harvest during this time as well.
It was also believed that a thin veil between our living world and the world of the dead was at its thinnest on this night. This meant that those who had crossed over could now come back to communicate and visit on this of all eerie nights. Many bonfires were set in celebration of these festivals. Costumes as well as masks were worn to mimic those of the dwelling spirits who may have ill intent on this devil’s night. The mask and costumes would confuse them and keep them from doing mischief to those wearing these. It was also said to appease all of the spirits as well.
The act of going from house to house for goodies on this haunting night can date back well into the Middle Ages. It is said to have gotten its start from the people who would go home to home wassailing during the Yuletide. In the Americas the art of trick-or treating started in the west end of the United States and then moved itself towards the east. The famous Jack-o-Lanterns of Halloween night is meant to ward off evil spirits with their bright candles and scary faces when lit and left burning on this All Hallows Eve. There are many other Irish and Scottish folktales regarding the Jack-o-Lanterns history and more. As with any fable there are many variations on it.
A few superstitions around Halloween include the famous pumpkin with scary faces outside your home with a lit candle within to keep evil demons and spirits at bay till the morning light. Then there is the one that tells you to only use brand new candles on this night, never old or previously used ones. The old ones can bring ill luck your way instead of great luck with the new ones. It is even said that if you notice one of your candles blow out without breeze or wind near them you have been visited by a ghost.

Best Time to Visit Boston
Boston is a city for all seasons depending on your taste and desired activities during the vacation. This makes it a city thats visited all around the year and therefore considerable price differences and ease of booking do not come at any specific time each year. It should be noted, however, that prices do rise up and bookings hard to get in early autumn and early summer as the universities in the area attract students families from all around the country for their graduation ceremonies and orientation weeks. Despite the difficulty in finding good deals and easy bookings, summer is a time when the city has a lot of outdoor activities to choose from. On the other hand, winter is a much quieter time with indoor activities superseding the outdoor fun of the summer. Theater, exhibitions, dining and holiday celebrations are the highlights of Boston Winters and if these are things that interest you then winters are the best time to visit.
