All too rare is an Asian American cast for a lead male role, so ‘Beyond the Mat’ certainly deserves note for casting Vietnamese actor John Wynn for the lead role, Aaron. Wynn, born in Virginia to Vietnamese mother and French father was subjected to the arts at an early age, with first attempting to become a musician, but finally breaking into acting.

Why do we celebrate St. Patricks Day? Who was that guy and why is it a major beer-drinking holiday celebrated with parades and shenanigans? Why do we wear green?

Well, we can look no further than the Irish, as St. Patrick was the patron saint of Ireland. St. Patricks Day started as purely a Christian observance holiday, then was developed into a feast holiday, and today is celebrated by Irish descendants world-wide.

St. Patrick was born into a Roman-British family in the early 400s AD with the birth name, Maewyn. He was given his Christian name of Patrick when he entered the priesthood later in life. He was captured by Irish raiders and taken into slavery at the age of 16. After six years he was able to escape and he fled to Gaul where he joined the Church and studied to be a priest. I suppose if one was held captive by the Irish for six years, one wouldnt be too eager to return however in 432 Patrick returned to Ireland as a bishop and spent 30 years teaching Gods word. During that time, St. Patrick was successful in converting a large number of Irish citizens to Christianity. The Irish were certainly thankful for Patricks forgiveness of their sins; in return they dubbed him a saint and declared March 17th an official holiday in remembrance.

Originally St. Patrick was associated with the color blue, however over the years the transition has been to green, mainly due to the shamrock. The wearing of the shamrock is a Christian tradition. It is said that St. Patrick used the shamrock as a teaching example to explain the Holy Trinity the father, son and Holy Spirit. Today, whether Irish or not, green is a customary color worn, along with shamrock pins, beaded necklaces and Leprechaun hats.

Starting in the 1600s, March 17th became a day that Irish Christians could take a break from fasting during the 40 days of lent. They were allowed one day to feast and drink alcohol. Over the centuries, the day has evolved to include parades, pub events and outrageous green attire. In 1931 the first St. Patricks Day parade was held in Dublin. Today New York City hosts one of the largest St. Patricks Day parades in the world. Chicago even goes so far to dye the Chicago River green.

Green Beer and Irish Stout

Green beer is a popular drink on St. Patricks Day, a way to truly show your spirit. Many bars and pubs offer a special green beer on their menu during the week of St. Patricks Day. Often just a drop or two of food coloring in a light colored lager is all you need to add to festive touch to your beverage, but beware of green teeth if you have one too many!

A good Irish stout is another widely consumed beverage on March 17th. Dublin-brewed Guinness is by far the most popular and well known choice. The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is an American mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion company that hosts most of the top-ranked fighters in the world and produces numerous events worldwide. The UFC has seven weight-divisions and enforces the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts. Dana White serves as the president of the UFC; Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta control its parent company, Zuffa, LLC.

Inspired by vale tudo tournaments in Brazil, the UFC and the sport of MMA have roots in the ancient Olympic combat sport of Pankration in 648 BC. The UFC held its first competition in Denver, Colorado in 1993. Showcasing fighters of different disciplines including boxing, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, wrestling, Muay Thai and other styles the UFC sought to identify the most effective martial art in a real fight. After a period of political backlash, the UFC gradually underwent reform by embracing stricter rules and achieving sanctioning with State Athletic Commissions.

With a cable-television deal and expansion into Canada, Europe, Australia the Middle East, Asia and new markets within the United States, the UFC as of 2011 has gained in popularity, along with greater mainstream-media coverage. As of 2011 viewers can access UFC programming on pay-per-view television in the U.S., Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Italy.

UFC programming can also be found on Spike and Versus in the U.S., on ESPN in the United Kingdom and Ireland, as well as in over 130 countries and in 20 different languages worldwide.
Although UFC used the tagline “There are no rules!” in the early 1990s, the UFC did in fact operate with limited rules. There was no biting, no eye gouging, and the system frowned on (but allowed) techniques such as hair pulling, headbutting, groin strikes and fish-hooking.

In fact, in a UFC 4 qualifying match, competitors Jason Fairn and Guy Mezger agreed not to pull hair as they both wore pony tails tied back for the match. Additionally, that same event saw a matchup between Keith Hackney and Joe Son in which Hackney unleashed a series of groin shots against Son while on the ground. The UFC had a reputation, especially in the early days, as an extremely violent event, as evidenced by a disclaimer in the beginning of the UFC 5 broadcast which warned audiences of the violent nature of the sport.

UFC 5 also introduced the first singles match, called “The Superfight.” This was an important development because singles matches would feature fighters who suffered no prior damage from a previous fight in the same event, unlike tournament matches. Singles matches would also become a staple in the UFC for years to come.

“The Superfight” began as a non-tournament match that would determine the first reigning UFC Champion for tournament winners to face; it later evolved into a match that could feature either title matches or non-title matches.

The “Superfight” would eventually completely phase out tournament matches; by UFC Brazil, the UFC abandoned the tournament format for an entire card of singles matches (aside from a one time UFC Japan tournament featuring Japanese fighters). UFC 6 was the first event to feature the crowning of the first non-tournament UFC Champion, Ken Shamrock.

Faced with the prospect of folding, the UFC stepped outside the bounds of pay-per-view and made a foray into television. After being featured in a reality television series, American Casino, and seeing how well the series worked as a promotion vehicle, the Fertitta brothers developed the idea of the UFC having its own reality series.

Their idea, The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) a reality television show featuring up-and-coming MMA fighters in competition for a six-figure UFC contract, with fighters eliminated from competition via exhibition mixed martial arts matches was pitched to several networks, each one rejecting the idea outright. Not until they approached Spike TV, with an offer to pay the $10 million production costs themselves, did they find an outlet.

In January 2005, Spike TV launched TUF in the timeslot following WWE Raw. The show became an instant success, culminating with a notable season finale brawl featuring finalists Forrest Griffin and Stephan Bonnar going toe-to-toe for the right to earn the six-figure contract, an event that Dana White credits for saving the UFC.On the heels of the Griffin/Bonnar finale, a second season of The Ultimate Fighter launched in August 2005, and two more seasons appeared in 2006. Spike and the UFC continue to create and air new seasons.

Following the success of The Ultimate Fighter, Spike also picked up UFC Unleashed, an hour-long weekly show featuring select fights from previous events. Spike also signed on to broadcast live UFC Fight Night, a series of fight events debuting in August 2005; Countdown specials to promote upcoming UFC pay-per-view cards, and several other series and specials featuring and promoting the UFC and its fighters.

A controversial film for many horror fans, Halloween III is probably the most despised entry in the series for many. This would be on account of the fact that it is the only Halloween movie that does not feature masked killer Michael Myers. But is that really such a bad thing? I mean, honestly?

The Halloween franchise suffered a very similar fate as the Friday the 13th series did at roughly the same time. The original concept for both franchises was to do a movie based on something completely different each year or so, making a series that would be something of an anthology of different horror stories. But after the huge success of the first film, Michael Myers, like Jason (despite the latter never actually appearing in the first ‘Friday’ movie) was revived for the sequel with mixed results. Harford Rabbi Organized Prayer Hanukkah

A song in Hebrew rang out from a crowd gathered in a Harford County park at sundown Wednesday. Throughout the joyful salute to Hanukkah, Peter Silton held a burning torch.

After the singers intoned, “Amen,” he lit the first candle of a towering metal menorah to honor the first night of the Jewish celebration. He needed a stepladder to light the shamas the candle that is usually lit first then used to light the others officially beginning the first Hanukkah observance in the county to be held on public property.

“Now it’s party time,” Rabbi Yekusiel Schusterman said. While music played in the background, the group sipped hot cider, ate latkes and doughnuts, and got to know one another.

“There are people here that I have known for years, and others I have never met,” said Silton, a Bel Air resident and friend of the rabbi. “We have created community here.”

The rabbi, who founded an Orthodox congregation in Bel Air only two months ago, had issued an open invitation to the community. About 60 people joined in an observance similar to many public celebrations across the nation on the first night of the eight-day feast.

“We want to publicly honor the Hanukkah miracle and encourage every Jew to light candles at home,” he said. “We hope this will get the word out about our congregation and this miracle of lights.”

The Orthodox congregation’s celebration was unusual for Harford County’s relatively small Jewish community, which traditionally has observed Hanukkah quietly, with most celebrations taking place in homes and at a long-established Reform synagogue in Havre de Grace. But Schusterman’s fledgling congregation, part of the Chabad movement, prefers a more public observance. The candle lighting and prayers precede the town’s annual tree lighting at the same location this weekend.

Town officials waived the permit requirement for the band shell in Shamrock Park, next to the town hall, and offered it as a shelter from the gusty winds, an accommodation the rabbi said made the festivities feel more intimate.

Silton, who worships at a synagogue in Owings Mills, said he did not grow up with such public displays, but he finds them widely accepted now.

“This just means Harford County is stepping into the 21st century,” he said. “This rabbi has already increased the study of Judaism and encouraged us all to learn and be more observant.”

Rabbi Gila Ruskin, leader of the 55-year-old Temple Adas Shalom in Havre de Grace, said her Reform congregation of about 200 households prefers to observe Hanukkah in their homes and at their synagogue rather than in a public location. The temple has planned several celebrations during the next week.

“I imagine most, if not all our members, will be lighting candles in their homes,” she said. “We encourage people to light the menorah and put it in a window to commemorate what happened thousands of years ago. Also, in that way, passers-by will know this is a Jewish home.”

She said she has no objection to Chabad’s more public proclamation of the miracle of lights. In fact, some in her congregation are stringing blue and white lights on their homes and a few have added blow-ups of menorahs and dreidls, the top used in Hanukkah games, to their front yards.

County Councilman James V. McMahan, just elected to his second term representing the Bel Air area, called Schusterman forward-thinking and lauded his efforts as “an incredible step forward in unity for all of us in one community.”

McMahan, who attended the service, said, “It is important that Christians and Jews show the solidarity that, biblically, goes way back. Why not continue this tradition today?”

Arthur C. Abramson, executive director of the Baltimore Jewish Council, said ordinarily he might question holding a religious service on public property. But, he said, since a tree lighting follows, he sees the Hanukkah observance as part of the town’s general celebration of the holidays.

McMahan said, “Jewish leaders across the nation have publicly defended the Christian celebration of a Christmas tree, so that it does not become a benign holiday tree. It is only fitting that we show good fellowship and support their holiday.”

The Hanukkah holiday is based on the Jewish belief in a miracle that happened thousands of years ago in Jerusalem’s Holy Temple, when Judah Maccabee lit the menorah there. Greek soldiers had ransacked the temple, leaving barely enough oil to light the menorah, a traditional symbol of Judaism, for one day. Tradition holds that the small supply lasted for eight days, until new oil was available.

In most homes, a candelabra with eight candles and a shamas has replaced the oil lamp.

Lisa Sullivan, who is Jewish and married to a Christian, came to the lighting ceremony with her three young children.

“We celebrate Christmas and Hanukkah at home,” she said. “We have a tree and a menorah, but I wanted the kids to see this service and learn a little about their Hebrew heritage.”

Schusterman opened Chabad of Harford County in a storefront at the corner of Lee and Main streets in Bel Air after hearing that many local Jews were traveling to Baltimore County to worship. He said he has contacted dozens of Jewish families to gauge their interest in joining him in worship. “I want to meet everyone, and I want their honest assessment,” he said.

“We are letting everyone know that our center is available to them,” Schusterman said. “I hope we will soon be bursting at the seams.”
